Whiskey & Werewolves by Carly Spade ~ An ARC book Review

This book is a rare find. In a world that is about instant gratification and the next quick fix we often don't see this kind of writing. I am so glad Carly Spade reached out and introduced me to this book.
This is a slow burn romance and I was hesitant to accept reading this book as slow burn are hard for me to get though but hold on a minute... can slow burn be done right? YES,YES it can and Carly did right by low burn. The first 1/4 of the book is slow, but has great character development. The kind that draws you into the characters back story. The kind that sets up the love to hate and hate to love relationship with the characters themselves. It took me the better part of a week to get though the first chapters and it was slow but not once do I regret not carefully reading every word. The back story and delicious hints of what was to come, the inner turmoil was astounding. Knuckle under and read it, you wont regret it.
The story opens up as the romance takes flight and at this point I read the book in a day. I didn't want to put it down. I wanted the next words, the next sentence and the what's next. The twists and turns of this book are amazing sometimes you are expecting them and then there are ones you just don't. One day from page sixty-something to the end and IT WAS WORTH IT!
The plot of star crossed lovers (in this case moon crossed) is some of the best. Its a Vampire and Werewolf scenario that Carly absolutely made work and work well. All the details seemed to be so fitting and I found myself saying, "that makes sense." even when you know historically these two types of beings do not co-exist in the same space at all in books. Carly bridged that gap so seamlessly in Whisky and Werewolves that it just works. These seemingly impossible lovers are captivating.
The wording, the sentences and even the paragraph structure make this book a book of substance. That is something the romance genre really needs. Carly clearly can deliver a well thought out and executed novel that won't disappoint.
The world building in this book is equally as well done. Its not too complex that you have to take notes. Its just enough to round out your reading experience. The supporting characters Carly created really do add to the world building that is supportive rater then over baring. It really makes for an easy to read book, that you want to pick up.
Watch out this book has some spice! Its done very aptly and not in a vulgar way. It really fits with the moment and the pace of the book. Even though some of the spice is in trigger warnings, it really does not need to be, in my opinion. After all we are talking about a human/K-9 hybrid a.k.a. a werewolf. The writing that included a K-9ish appearance to certain body parts is absolutely warranted and not done in a vulgar manner. The thoughtfulness in how the spice was placed in this book and how the spice moments played out was well done. Not once did I feel it crossed a line but rather added to the depth of the story.
If you have a TBR list or this is on a list of yours. READ IT! If its not on your read list yet ADD IT. It is so worth the time.
